The Space Between Us

(Sophomore Thesis, 2022)

Separated by our own schedules, spaces, and habits, my family struggles to find ways to come together. The Space Between Us explores my family’s dynamics and emphasizes the connection between our shared spaces and people. We function as individuals who unintentionally isolate ourselves from each other and the images investigate the shared and separate lives of each individual. We coexist in the same household and I reveal the intimacy and relationships between us. 

As I explore these spaces, I begin to capture the intimate and quiet moments within them and how my family members occupy them daily. With three generations living under one roof, the distance between us is very evident. Whether it be staying in bed all day or staring at a screen for hours on end, we are never all together in one room. 

But I want this to slowly change. Even though this isolation is part of how we function, there’s also a disconnection arising between us. As a result, I want to start introducing things that will bring us closer, starting with the sense of touch.
